This movement began with a group of 12 Aussies who gave up their holidays, travelled to Africa, and came back forever changed.

My name is Akika Gilbertson,
and my journey began with my husband Andrew.
Nearly three years ago, on our first date, he told me about Hands at Work in Africa. I couldn't quite understand why this tradie from Sunbury had travelled to more African countries than me, or why he was so passionate about spending his leave serving some of the world's most vulnerable communities.
What I've come to understand is that Andrew had encountered Jesus through those trips.
It was never about what he could offer Africa.
It was about witnessing Jesus restore broken lives, and finding his own life quietly transformed in the process.
When I joined the trip he led in 2025, I went thinking I had something to give.
I left knowing I was the one who had received. Through the Life Centres, safe spaces where children are cared for, nourished, and loved, I met God in a way I hadn't before.
This movement is not just about Africa, it's about Jesus.
In Matthew 5, Jesus proclaims that the kingdom of heaven belongs to the oppressed, the grieving, and the ones the world overlooks.
This is what drives us to advocate.
We encounter Him through serving what matters to Him most, people.
I pray the Holy Spirit continues to grow in us a longing to serve and seek justice, advocating for the kids in Zambia and for the vulnerable we overlook within our own communities.
